Dissertation Prize Award

The North American Society for Sport History (NASSH) invites submissions for its NASSH Dissertation Prize. The newly inaugurated Dissertation Prize will be awarded on a biannual basis and recognize outstanding doctoral dissertations in the field of sport history. The winner of the prize will receive $1000.

Eligibility:   The next award to be offered will be the 2025 award for PhDs submitted between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2025. In addition the following eligibility criteria apply:

  • Applicants must be current NASSH members at the time of submission, as well as the year the prize is awarded.
  • Consistent with the scope of NASSH itself, any historical study of sport (defined as “all aspects of competitive games, play, physical culture, and all other forms of physical activity”) will be considered.
  • Eligibility for this award is not contingent upon an applicant’s national citizenship or the location of the university in which an applicant was enrolled.

Application Procedure: Applicants must complete the Dissertation Prize Award nomination form (available as a PDF). Candidates should attach the nomination form, a letter of nomination from either the author or a dissertation committee member, and a complete copy of their dissertation in PDF form and save the all files as a single PDF document. The files should be named LastName_FirstName.pdf and should be uploaded to the NASSH Conference Conftool system under the Dissertation Prize Award option.

2025 DEADLINE: January 15, 2025
