NASSH 2006 - GLENWOOD SPRINGS:
Folks- I wanted to address you all regarding the 2006 NASSH meeting in Glenwood Springs, Colorado and discuss some concerns that were raised about the meeting before the deadline for NASSH proposals. Some of this was addressed in Green Bay, but not everything. I will be glad to talk individually to anyone who wants more information or insight on the Glenwood Springs site. Ron Smith will summarize some of this in the newsletter also. First, getting to Glenwood Springs. The easiest way to fly is to Eagle/Vail airport, 20 miles away. Six major carrier- Delta, American, United, Northwest, USAir and Continental-fly to Eagle/Vail. There is a shuttle from the airport to the Hotel Colorado operated by Colorado Mountain Express. It costs $7, but there will be discount ( probably to $5 or ^ for NASSH members who reserve in advance). There are also four or five car rental companies located at Eagle/Vail airport. Other places to fly include Denver (162 miles east) where one can also rent a car and drive through the Rockies or Aspen (38 miles away) where cars can also be rented. The Amtrak train from Denver is a spectacular ride but takes about six hours. NASSH members will get a discount which the Glenwood Chamber of Commerce is negotiating.

Rooms and room prices. It is really important for attendees to stay at the conference hotel, the Hotel Colorado, in order for us to reach the minimum room nights needed to make the meeting rooms free of charge. Single and double room prices are $99 and family style rooms are $129. These are two rooms with four beds, two in each room, but a shared bathroom between the rooms. For $33/per person per night, I this is a great deal and grad students should "jump on it". We will have most of the hotel and all of the meeting rooms so that should be fun.

I encourage you to plan on coming early, staying late and/or bringing family members. There is white water rafting in the Colorado available with an excellent service right in the hotel. A group of at least 8 will get a 10% discount. There are also bike rentals in the hotel and they will drive you 16.2 miles away and then people can bike back on the path along the river. Stops for hiking trails can be made on the route also. The top 9 hole golf course in the state is available for the golfers. The Rec Center has two full basketball courts and 6 tennis and we will get the discount given to Glenwood Springs residents. Hang gliding is possible and there is a cavern/amusement park accessible by a tramway in the town. Please contact me directly (mrn2@psu.edu), not the list if you have any questions. I will update you with more information as we move closer to the conference date. Thanks.
