The North American Society for Sport History announces its twenty-second annual "NASSH Graduate Essay Prize." The NASSH Prize will be given for the essay that a panel of judges deems of highest quality. The student whose essay is chosen shall present the paper at the 2008 Convention, held in Lake Placid, New York, May 23-26, 2008.

ELIGIBILITY

  1. Any student who is doing graduate work during the 2007-2008 year, including both masters and doctoral students.
  2. Previous winners are not eligible.
  3. A student who has previously submitted a paper to the Graduate Essay Contest may not present a paper on a similar subject.

AWARD

  1. Economy airfare and return from a site in North America to the 36th Annual NASSH Convention in Lake Placid, New York, May 23-26, 2008.
  2. Accommodations and meals at the convention.
  3. Convention registration.
  4. A one-year membership to NASSH.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Candidates are to submit, by January 15, 2008, four copies of a 3,000-5,000 word sport history essay. (Essays with a text of over 5,000 words will not be considered.) The 5000 word limit will be calculated based on the traditional practices of the historical profession. One page of double-spaced text--in a standard format with a minimum of 1-inch margins and a word-processing font size no smaller than 12--equals 250 words. Thus papers must not exceed twenty pages in length and must conform to the standard format in terms of margins and font size. For examples of suitable topics and format, see articles in the Journal of Sport History, that follow the University of Chicago Manual of Style.

The essay is to be submitted to:

  2. The research and writing are to be undertaken by the student. The essay must be double spaced with notes collected at the end. Endnotes do not count toward the page limit requirement.
  3. The writer shall attend the convention and present the paper.
  4. The winning essay shall be sent to the Journal of Sport History for review and possible publication
