BOOK AWARD COMMITTEE
    The Book Award Committee shall normally consist of five members, appointed by the President.
     
  OPERATING CODES
  I. Purpose
   

To promote and honor outstanding research and writing through the presentation of the annual NASSH Book Award in Sport History.

  II. Structure
   
  1. The Book Award Committee shall consist of five members, appointed by the President.
  2. Members of the Committee shall serve for four years on a staggered basis.
  3. The Chair for the following year shall be selected by the Committee at its meeting on the day prior to the opening sessions of the NASSH Convention
  III.
   
  1. A plan of action for the coming year shall be discussed at the annual meeting and shall include a time-line of activities for the Chair and Committee members.
  2. Each Committee member shall read all books received and select up to five books for further consideration; comments on these books shall be forwarded to the Chair.
  3. From these most favored books, the Chair shall compile a composite of comments for distribution to the Committee; One to three of these books shall be selected for consideration by the Committee at the NASSH Convention
  IV. Responsibilities of the Chair
   
  1. To oversee the activities of the Committee during the year.
  2. To place announcements about the annual Book Award in appropriate academic journals and newsletters.
  3. To maintain a current database of publishers' addresses. (This list has traditionally been kept by the Secretary-Treasurer.)
  4. To initiate the selection of books for the Book Award by writing to publishing houses, as well as soliciting particular books suggested by colleagues.
  5. To contact all presses that publish appropriate books, requesting that copies of books be sent to each member of the Committee by January 15th.
  6. To compile the first rounds of comments by Committee members.
  7. To co-ordinate the final selection of the Book Award at the annual Convention.
  8. To make the presentation of the winning book and author at the annual Awards Banquet.
  9. To contact the Secretary-Treasurer so that a check for $500 will be available at the Awards Banquet.
  10. To inform the publisher of the winning book of the honor.
  11. To provide the collector of the Annual Book Display a list of up to ten books that are receiving attention by the Committee to insure that the best books will be in the Display
  V. Meetings
   
  1. The Committee shall meet on the day preceding the Opening Sessions at the Annual Convention.
  2. The Book Award shall be presented at the Award Ceremony of the annual NASSH Banquet.
  VI. Reports
   

A final report shall be presented to the NASSH Council at its Annual Meeting.

  VII. Policies
   
  1. The Book Award is given for a distinguished book written in English on any aspect of sport history, without chronological or geographic restriction.
  2. The Award shall be a cash prize of $500 and a commemorative certificate for the author.
  3. Books published during the preceding calendar year are eligible for the Award.
  4. Biographies, monographs, and works of synthesis and interpretation are eligible.
  5. A new, separate award has been established for the best anthology in sport history, which also has a cash prize of $500.
  6. Translations and collections of documents will not be considered.
  7. The winning author(s), title(s), and publisher(s) should be listed on the announcement that will be sent to publishers the following year.
